Aristide
Maillol

Century marks are arbitrary divisions of time - but the statues that Maillol began showing the art world around 1900 set the standards that the generation born over the previous 25 years would follow and his seductive sculptural voice woud echo through European (and American) sculpture throughout the next 80 years.

A few years ago, I met a 1990 graduate of the Soviet Union's premier art school, the Leningrad Academy. At that time, Soviet art students were taught to make two kinds of sculpture, abstract and figurative - and as she said, figurative sculpture meant Maillol.
