Sergei Mercurov


Born 1881 in Armenian city of Alexandropol.

1902 began to work for Swiss sculptor, Adolf Meyer - entered Munich Academy of Arts.

1905-7 studied in Paris -- then moved to Russia -- carving granite monuments to Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Meets with Lenin in 1917 and begins a program of monumental sculpture propoganda -- later making the authoritative images of the dead leader. Spends rest of his life in Ismailov.

Delegate of Moscow Soviet, and assisted at the Pushkin museum in Moskow.

Died 1952.
