John Storrs
1885-1956
Storrs is mostly known as an abstract
sculptor, but he studied the figure as a student and continued to practice
it throughout his career. Though born in Chicago, he lived mostly in
France and became attached to the Moderns of Paris (Marsden Hartley,
Leger, Lipchitz, Duchamp, Zadkine, Zorach, Noguchi, Man Ray, and Joseph
Stella). Regarding the figure, he spent a year with Charles Grafly in
Philadelphia and worked with both Rodin and Laredo Taft. The only male
heir of a wealthy architect/developer he probably did not need to sell his
work, but he did receive some commissions from Chicago architects,
including the monumental 'Ceres' on top of the Board of Trade building.
